Acceptance

ESA (Emotional Support Animals): Accepted with Conditions
PSA (Psychiatric Support Animals): Accepted (Dogs and Cats ONLY)
Service Animals: Accepted (Dogs and Cats ONLY)

Quick Checklist (Bring to the Station)

Required Documentation & Gear (must bring)

  • Physical ID Card (animal + handler identification).
  • Recognition Gear: Service Animal vest, bandana, or harness.
  • All operator-required accessibility or approval forms (if requested).
  • Vaccination Records including rabies certificate (recommended for interstate rail travel).
  • Microchip matching all documentation.
  • Veterinary Health Certificate (recommended for cross-state or cross-border travel).

Preferred Documentation (greatly facilitates acceptance & verification)

  • Registration Certificate (our registry is accepted by all major rail operators).
  • Prescription Letter confirming PSA or Service Animal need.
  • Behavior Certificate.

Steps to Take (in Order)

  • Before your trip, notify Amtrak that you are traveling with a Service Dog or PSA.
  • Carry all documents in printed and digital format.
  • Arrive early at the station to allow staff to verify documentation if needed.

Route Limitations (Train Travel)

  • Service Dogs and PSAs may travel in the passenger carriage at no additional charge.
  • Animals must remain on leash or harness, under handler control at all times.
  • ESAs may be subject to seat restrictions and route-by-route acceptance conditions.
  • Large animals may be refused if they obstruct aisles or safety exits.
