Iceland: Laws & Regulations

🇮🇸 Iceland’s Laws & Regulations for Assistance Animals are as follows:

Acceptance

Emotional Support Animals (ESA):Accepted with Conditions

Psychiatric Support Animals (PSA):Accepted Nationwide

Service Animals:Accepted Nationwide

Tip:Always carry your Physical ID Card, Recognition Gear, Registration Certificate, and Behavior Certificate. These greatly improve acceptance throughout Iceland.

Housing

Iceland does not maintain a nationwide housing law for assistance animals. Acceptance depends on landlord discretion and building rules. Service Animals and PSAs are commonly accepted with documentation. ESAs typically require a prescription letter, proof of registration, and behavior documentation.

Air Travel

Iceland follows European aviation standards. Airlines operating from Keflavík International Airport generally accept Service Animals and PSAs in the cabin with required documentation. ESAs are usually accepted with conditions depending on airline and destination-country rules.

Tip:Our registry is approved by all airlines — having your ID card and recognition gear ensures smoother verification at Keflavík and other EU airports.

Public Access

Iceland has strong disability-access protections. Service Animals and PSAs are generally allowed in public transport, medical facilities, government buildings, hotels, restaurants, museums, nature attractions, and shops when properly identified. ESAs may be accepted with documentation but have no guaranteed access rights.

Additional Notes

  • Service Animals & PSAs: fully recognized across Iceland.
  • ESAs: accepted with documentation depending on venue.
  • Iceland enforces EU-style microchip and rabies rules, but also has additional quarantine and veterinary requirements due to geographic biosecurity concerns.
  • Recognition Gear helps reduce access delays, especially in tourist-heavy areas.

ESA:
