🇮🇸 Iceland’s Laws & Regulations for Assistance Animals are as follows:
Acceptance
Housing
Iceland does not maintain a nationwide housing law for assistance animals. Acceptance depends on landlord discretion and building rules. Service Animals and PSAs are commonly accepted with documentation. ESAs typically require a prescription letter, proof of registration, and behavior documentation.
Air Travel
Iceland follows European aviation standards. Airlines operating from KeflavÃk International Airport generally accept Service Animals and PSAs in the cabin with required documentation. ESAs are usually accepted with conditions depending on airline and destination-country rules.
Public Access
Iceland has strong disability-access protections. Service Animals and PSAs are generally allowed in public transport, medical facilities, government buildings, hotels, restaurants, museums, nature attractions, and shops when properly identified. ESAs may be accepted with documentation but have no guaranteed access rights.
Additional Notes
- Service Animals & PSAs: fully recognized across Iceland.
- ESAs: accepted with documentation depending on venue.
- Iceland enforces EU-style microchip and rabies rules, but also has additional quarantine and veterinary requirements due to geographic biosecurity concerns.
