Traveling to United Kingdom – Import & Transit Rules

Entering from Europe

  • No documents required for Service Dogs, PSDs, or ESAs.
  • If you are flying, follow the airline’s requirements only.

Entering from Outside of Europe (International Entry)

Required Documentation & Gear (must bring)

  • ISO-Compliant Microchip (must match all documents)
  • Rabies Vaccination Certificate
    • Puppy must be 12+ weeks old at time of vaccination
    • High-risk countries: Rabies Titer required
    • Low-risk countries (Canada, Western Europe, etc.): Titer not required
  • Veterinary Health Certificate (vet letter confirming no known diseases)

Preferred Documentation (greatly facilitates acceptance and pre-clearance)

  • Physical ID Card (animal + handler)
  • Recognition Gear (Service Animal vest, bandana, or harness)
  • Prescription Letter (ESA, PSA, or Service Animal letter from a licensed professional)

Important Notes

  • A physical ID Card, Registration Certificate, and visible Recognition Gear speed up the processing.
  • No airport restrictions: Dogs may enter the UK only through approved ports of entry, including major airports and ferry terminals.
  • Assistance Animals follow the same import rules as pets, but airlines must treat Service Dogs under specific UK carriage rules.

Deworming / Tapeworm Treatment Rules

The UK requires mandatory tapeworm treatment (Echinococcus) for dogs entering from most non-EU countries.
The treatment must be administered by a veterinarian within the required timeframe before arrival and must be properly documented.

Restricted Breeds at Entry

The UK has strict national breed bans. The following breeds (and any dogs that appear similar) are prohibited from entry:

  • Pit Bull Terrier
  • Dogo Argentino
  • Fila Brasileiro
  • Japanese Tosa

These dogs generally cannot legally enter the UK unless pre-approved exemptions apply.

Public Transport & Transit Rules

Service Dogs are fully permitted on UK public transport, including trains, buses, trams, ferries, and the London Underground.
Pets may require a carrier, leash, muzzle, or ticket depending on operator rules. Service Dogs travel without restrictions or fees.
