Entering from Outside of Europe (International Entry)
Required Documentation & Gear (must bring)
- ISO-Compliant Microchip (must match all documents)
- Rabies Vaccination Certificate
- Puppy must be 12+ weeks old at the time of vaccination
- High-risk countries: Rabies Titer required
- Low-risk countries (Canada, Western Europe, etc.): Titer not required
- Veterinary Health Certificate (vet letter confirming no known diseases)
Preferred Documentation (greatly facilitates acceptance and pre-clearance)
- Physical ID Card (animal + handler)
- Recognition Gear (Service Animal vest, bandana, or harness)
- Prescription Letter (ESA, PSA, or Service Animal letter from a licensed professional)
Important Notes
- A physical ID Card, Registration Certificate, and visible Recognition Gear speed up the processing.
- No airport restrictions: Dogs may enter Spain through any approved international airport once airline and import requirements are satisfied.
- Assistance Animals follow the same import rules as pets.
Deworming / Tapeworm Treatment Rules
Spain does not require tapeworm treatment for dogs entering the country.
However, deworming is recommended due to the prevalence of parasites in warm climates and rural regions.
Restricted Breeds at Entry
Spain allows all breeds to enter, but certain breeds are legally classified as “Potentially Dangerous Dogs (PPP)” and must follow strict rules:
- American Pit Bull Terrier
- Staffordshire Bull Terrier
- American Staffordshire Terrier
- Rottweiler
- Dogo Argentino
- Fila Brasileiro
- Tosa Inu
- Akita Inu
Dogs in this category require a short leash, muzzle, and may require local registration.
Public Transport & Transit Rules
Service Dogs are fully permitted on Spanish public transport, including RENFE trains, buses, metros, and ferries.
Pets may require a muzzle, carrier, or ticket depending on the operator. Service Dogs travel without restrictions or fees.
