Deworming / Tapeworm Treatment Rules

Ireland requires mandatory tapeworm (Echinococcus) treatment for dogs entering from many countries.
Treatment must be administered by a veterinarian within the approved timeframe before arrival.

Restricted Breeds at Entry

Ireland allows entry for all dog breeds, but certain breeds are classified as “restricted” and must follow strict control rules in public:

  • American Pit Bull Terrier
  • English Bull Terrier
  • Staffordshire Bull Terrier
  • Rottweiler
  • German Shepherd
  • Japanese Akita
  • Japanese Tosa
  • Doberman Pinscher

Restricted breeds must be leashed and muzzled in public at all times.

Public Transport & Transit Rules

Service Dogs are fully permitted on Irish public transportation, including buses, trams, trains, and ferries.
Pets may be restricted or require a carrier, muzzle, or ticket depending on the transport operator. Service Dogs travel without restrictions or fees.
