Traveling to Iceland – Import & Transit Rules

Entering from Europe

  • No documents required for Service Dogs, PSDs, or ESAs for travel within Europe in general.
  • However, Iceland is an exception: All dogs entering Iceland, including Service Dogs, must meet Iceland’s strict import rules even if coming from Europe.
  • If you are flying, follow the airline’s requirements only.

Entering from Outside of Europe (International Entry)

Required Documentation & Gear (must bring)

  • ISO-Compliant Microchip (must match all documents)
  • Rabies Vaccination Certificate
    • Puppy must be 12+ weeks old at the time of vaccination
    • High-risk countries: Rabies Titer required
    • Low-risk countries (Canada, Western Europe, etc.): Titer not required
  • Veterinary Health Certificate (vet letter confirming no known diseases)

Preferred Documentation (greatly facilitates acceptance and pre-clearance)

  • Physical ID Card (animal + handler)
  • Recognition Gear (Service Animal vest, bandana, or harness)
  • Prescription Letter (ESA, PSA, or Service Animal letter from a licensed professional)

Important Notes

  • Iceland has the strictest dog import rules in Europe, including mandatory quarantine for all animals.
  • No airport restrictions: Dogs may enter only through approved Icelandic entry points and must follow Iceland’s import permit procedures.
  • Assistance Animals follow the same import rules as pets and are not exempt from quarantine.

Deworming / Tapeworm Treatment Rules

Iceland requires mandatory tapeworm (Echinococcus) treatment prior to entry.
Documentation must prove the treatment was administered within the required timeframe before arrival.

Restricted Breeds at Entry

Iceland maintains strict breed restrictions and may prohibit the importation of:

  • Pit Bull–type dogs
  • Mastiff-type dogs
  • Dogs from high-risk regions or certain climates

Additionally, Arctic fox–like breeds from some origins may be restricted to protect local wildlife.

Public Transport & Transit Rules

Service Dogs are permitted on most Icelandic public transportation, but rules vary by operator.
Pets are often restricted and may not be allowed inside certain public buildings. Service Dogs may require documentation when entering sensitive facilities.
