Traveling to France – Import & Transit Rules

Entering from Europe

  • No documents required for Service Dogs, PSDs, or ESAs.
  • If you are flying, follow the airline’s requirements only.

Entering from Outside of Europe (International Entry)

Required Documentation & Gear (must bring)

  • ISO-Compliant Microchip (must match all documents)
  • Rabies Vaccination Certificate
    • Puppy must be 12+ weeks old at the time of vaccination
    • High-risk countries: Rabies Titer required
    • Low-risk countries (Canada, Western Europe, etc.): Titer not required
  • Veterinary Health Certificate (vet letter confirming no known diseases)

Preferred Documentation (greatly facilitates acceptance and pre-clearance)

  • Physical ID Card (animal + handler)
  • Recognition Gear (Service Animal vest, bandana, or harness)
  • Prescription Letter (ESA, PSA, or Service Animal letter from a licensed professional)

Important Notes

  • A physical ID Card, Registration Certificate, and visible Recognition Gear speed up the processing.
  • No airport restrictions: You may enter France through any international airport as long as airline rules and required documentation are met.
  • Assistance Animals follow the same import rules as pets.

Deworming / Tapeworm Treatment Rules

France does not require tapeworm treatment for incoming dogs.
Routine deworming is recommended, especially for dogs visiting rural or agricultural regions.

Restricted Breeds at Entry

France has specific rules for “Category 1” and “Category 2” dogs.
Category 1 dogs cannot be imported or brought into France at all. These include:

  • Pit Bull–type dogs (no pedigree)
  • Boerboel-type dogs
  • Dogs resembling Tosa Inu without pedigree

Category 2 dogs (with pedigree papers) may enter with strict conditions such as leash, muzzle, and insurance requirements.

Public Transport & Transit Rules

Service Dogs are allowed on all public transportation, including SNCF trains, RATP buses, metro, and trams.
Pets may require a leash, muzzle, or paid ticket depending on operator rules, but Service Dogs travel without restrictions.
