Traveling to San Marino – Import & Transit Rules

Entering from Europe

  • No documents required for Service Dogs, PSDs, or ESAs.
  • If you are flying, follow the airline’s requirements only.

Entering from Outside of Europe (International Entry)

Required Documentation & Gear (must bring)

  • ISO-Compliant Microchip (must match all documents)
  • Rabies Vaccination Certificate
    • Puppy must be 12+ weeks old at the time of vaccination
    • High-risk countries: Rabies Titer required
    • Low-risk countries (Canada, Western Europe, etc.): Titer not required
  • Veterinary Health Certificate (vet letter confirming no known diseases)

Preferred Documentation (greatly facilitates acceptance and pre-clearance)

  • Physical ID Card (animal + handler)
  • Recognition Gear (Service Animal vest, bandana, or harness)
  • Prescription Letter (ESA, PSA, or Service Animal letter from a licensed professional)

Important Notes

  • A physical ID Card, Registration Certificate, and visible Recognition Gear speed up the processing.
  • No airport restrictions: San Marino has no airports. Travelers must enter through Italy and follow Italian import rules before crossing into San Marino.
  • Assistance Animals follow the same import rules as pets because San Marino adopts Italy’s entry requirements.

Deworming / Tapeworm Treatment Rules

San Marino follows Italian regulations: tapeworm treatment is not required for dogs entering from most countries.
Routine deworming is recommended for dogs visiting rural or mountainous regions.

Restricted Breeds at Entry

San Marino has no national breed bans.
However, since all entry passes through Italy, Italian rules may apply to certain “high-risk” breeds requiring leashes or muzzles in public areas.

Public Transport & Transit Rules

San Marino does not have a national public transport system that restricts animals; most travel is via local roads from Italy.
Service Dogs are allowed everywhere, while pets may require leashes or carriers depending on specific venues or vehicles.
