Louisiana’s Laws & Regulations for Assistance Animals are as follows:
Acceptance
Always carry your Physical ID Card and visible Recognition Gear. In Louisiana—especially in cities like New Orleans and Baton Rouge—a Prescription Letter, Registration Certificate, and Behavior Certificate help prevent delays.
Housing
Louisiana housing providers must comply with the federal Fair Housing Act (FHA), requiring reasonable accommodations for assistance animals including ESAs, PSAs, and Service Animals. Louisiana adds no ESA-specific laws, so FHA governs most housing situations statewide.
Air Travel
Louisiana follows the Air Carrier Access Act (ACAA). Only trained service dogs qualify as Service Animals for airline travel. ESAs must fly under airline pet policies. DOT Service Animal forms may be required at New Orleans (MSY), Baton Rouge (BTR), Shreveport (SHV), and Lafayette (LFT).
Our registry is approved by all airlines — carrying your Physical ID Card, Registration Certificate, and Recognition Gear ensures quick verification under ACAA requirements.
Public Access
Public access in Louisiana follows the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and Louisiana Revised Statutes § 46:1951–1959. Only trained Service Dogs (including psychiatric service dogs) must be allowed in restaurants, hotels, public transit, medical facilities, retail stores, and government buildings. ESAs do not qualify for public access under ADA or state law.
Additional Notes
- ADA (public access): Only task-trained dogs are Service Animals.
- ACAA (air travel): Airlines accept trained Service Dogs only.
- FHA (housing): ESAs, PSAs, and Service Animals qualify with proper documentation.
- Louisiana law: State statutes reinforce ADA protections and prohibit misrepresentation.
- Recognition Gear: Highly recommended for smooth access in busy tourist areas.
